A long-time cinematographer for Hou Hsiao-hsien, Yao mirrors Hou's attempt to capture the malaise of the youth in contemporary Taiwan and turns in a visually accomplished drama. Clearly influenced by Hou's distinctive style and aesthetics, Reflections has an affinity for formalism that is rich in symbolism. Through two lesbians and their common male friend, the film presents a story about youths dealing with estrangement and their ambiguous attitudes toward love and lust.

導演姚宏易是侯孝賢的長期製片夥伴。姚努力捕捉現代台灣年輕人的抑鬱，並成功地賦予視覺上的效果，把它拍成一齣戲。《愛麗絲的鏡子》顯然深受侯孝賢的特殊風格與美學的影響，在近乎形式主義中，蘊含著豐厚的象徵意義。透過兩位女同性戀者與她們的共同男友之間的關係，這部影片娓娓道出一則年輕人對情慾的曖昧態度，以及因而導致失和的愛情故事。
